Six Months

Posted: 8/12/2009 1:55 AM

It's been six months since we started our Oasis Garden.  The trellis is nearly full.  It's supporting Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers.  The rest of the garden is still pretty full as well.  This past month, we had our biggest harvest yet-over 50 pounds of vegetables.  Since starting the garden last February, we've harvested a total of 101 pounds and we've grown 25 different things!

We were out of town this past week.  Since there's so much growing in the garden right now, I asked a friend to stop by a couple of times to pick the ripe veggies.  When I came home, the garden looked terrific.  However, it's now surrounded by dead grass.  Since San Diego implemented water rationing last month, about the only part of our backyard that looks nice is the garden.  Its name - Oasis - is now very appropriate. Fortunately, the water restrictions don't apply to the low-flow soaker hose system used in the garden.

But, I can't complain too much about San Diego, because we are blessed with fabulous weather that allows me to continue gardening throughout the year.  I planted yellow crookneck squash and romaine lettuce where the corn and beans had been.

The soil level had sunk a bit, so I first added some Miracle Gro Organic Garden Soil.  I also started some broccoli and cauliflower seeds in Styrofoam cups.  The zucchini plant will be done soon and there'll be a big open space on the left side of the garden.

Something ate the flowers of the cherry tomato plant while I was out of town.  So, I sprayed it with Dr. Earth Organic Home & Garden Insect Spray.   Hopefully, that will do the trick.  I also had to cut the strawberry runners again.  Our two strawberry plants are trying to multiply, but I won't let them.

Since I was out of town, I have no recipes to post this week.  However, in our kitchen there are now baskets full of tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber and Swiss chard.  It's time to get cookin'!
