Nothing Beats Home Grown Tomatoes!

They were worth waiting for! We finally have lots of ripe tomatoes and they are fabulous! Immediately after harvesting the first two, I ate them right on the spot--they didn't even make it to the dining table.
The first cucumbers are also on the way and the lettuce will soon be ready to harvest.
What a salad we'll be able to make! Generally, by the time our tomatoes are ripe, it's too hot to grow lettuce. But, so far our lettuce is doing fine. I think it's benefiting from the shade provided by the corn and some of the other larger plants.
Last night, a spider built a web from the trellis to the corn (which is now at least 8 feet high). Spiders are beneficial insects. They eat the bugs that would eat our vegetables. While I like the idea of bugs being caught in the web, I'm still not that excited about this new visitor. I wonder...should I evict it?
We harvested lots of zucchini this past week. Here are a couple of terrific recipes from www.allrecipes.com : Zucchini Patties and Blueberry Zucchini Bread. I also harvested four large Serrano peppers to make Ding Dong Eight-Alarm Chile (www.epicurious.com). I thought it was delicious, but my husband didn't think it was hot enough!
