When I look outside, I see a playset.

It’s an attractive playset with cedar timbers, wee windows and a sturdy roof, but a playset nonetheless.

When my children look outside, though, they see something else altogether.

We constructed our Atlantis Playset just a few weeks ago and I have marveled at all the uses my three and six-year-olds have invented for it.

At times, the two of them are pirates sailing in shark infested seas, the two of them safe and dry in their sturdy ship high above the water.

At other times, they sit atop the glider swing, my daughter in front, my son clinging to her from behind. In their minds, they are riding a horse named Paint, the fastest horse in all the land.

Their friends come over to play and the lower level of their playset is transformed into a shop. My son stands behind the counter and offers various goods for sale to my daughter and her playmates.

When they tire of that game, they take turns on the swings. My daughter pushes my son and tries to teach him how to pump his legs to go higher.

Next, they’re back in the clubhouse, with a few bug collecting boxes and a blanket. They can roam the backyard, collect a few specimens, and retire to their fort to examine what they’ve captured.

They haven’t even really discovered the slide or the climbing wall yet. I watch them play and say nothing. They’ll find uses for those features, I’m sure, as soon as they’re ready.

I have been amazed by all they’ve found to do on the playset as it is. Even though our neighbors on either side have playsets of their own, everyone wants to play on our playset  now. Theirs is the newest, the only one with a real roof, and the only with a two-person glider. The other kids can’t get enough of it.

And neither can mine. This summer is shaping up to be a great one, and our playset is the new centerpiece of playtime.
